Sedation Dentistry Services

Sedation dentistry is not only for patients who are simply anxious. It is a clinically important pathway for individuals whose medical, developmental, or cognitive circumstances make routine dental visits difficult, distressing, or unsafe without it. Our goal is to ensure that every patient — regardless of their ability to cooperate with a standard dental appointment — has access to the oral healthcare they need, delivered with dignity, safety, and comfort.

Who This Service Is For

  • Neurodivergent individuals, including patients with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and sensory processing differences, for whom the sounds, lights, textures, and unpredictability of a dental visit can be overwhelming.
  • Individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, who may be unable to consistently follow instructions, sit still, or consent to step-by-step treatment in the traditional sense.
  • Patients living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, who may experience confusion, agitation, or an inability to understand or cooperate with treatment, particularly in unfamiliar settings.
  • Patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia, including those with a history of traumatic dental experiences.
  • Individuals with significant gag reflex, complex medical histories, or physical limitations, that make conventional treatment impractical.
  • Patients requiring extensive or multiple procedures, who prefer to have several treatment needs addressed in a single, comfortable visit rather than repeated appointments.

Services Offered Under Sedation

The following dental services can be provided under sedation at this facility:

  • Dental X-Rays: Diagnostic imaging obtained comfortably, including for young or anxious patients who find it difficult to keep still or tolerate films while fully alert.
  • Prophylaxis (Cleaning): Professional cleaning and preventive care delivered gently for patients with sensitivity, a strong gag reflex, or dental anxiety.
  • Sealants: Protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent decay — ideal for children who cannot sit still for long.
  • Restorations (Fillings): Treatment of cavities and tooth repair completed calmly, allowing multiple teeth to be addressed in a single relaxed visit.
  • Simple Extractions: Routine removal of teeth performed painlessly and without distress for nervous patients of any age.
  • Surgical Extractions: Removal of impacted, broken, or difficult teeth — including wisdom teeth — with the patient fully relaxed throughout.
  • Implant Placement: Single, multiple, and full-arch dental implant surgery carried out in a calm, pain-controlled setting.
  • Frenectomy: Correction of a restrictive lip or tongue tie (frenum), often needed in infants and children, performed quickly and comfortably.
  • Pulpotomy: Treatment of the nerve in baby or young teeth (the paediatric “baby root canal”) to relieve pain and save the tooth, with the child fully settled.
  • Minor Oral Surgery: A range of soft-tissue and surgical procedures completed safely and comfortably under sedation.
  • Full-mouth rehabilitation: Where multiple procedures are combined into one visit to minimize the number of sedation episodes a patient must undergo

Why Sedation, and Why Here

Many of the patients we serve are unable to safely or successfully complete dental treatment in a conventional setting. Sedation allows treatment to proceed with the patient in a relaxed, often sleep-like state, minimizing distress, movement, and the risk of injury to the patient or treating team. Because sedation carries its own medical considerations — particularly for older patients, those with complex health histories, or those on multiple medications — we provide this service at Health Care Associates, where appropriate monitoring equipment, emergency support, and medical staff are present throughout the procedure.

Before any sedation appointment, patients (or their caregivers and legal representatives, where applicable) will undergo a pre-treatment medical and dental assessment to confirm suitability, discuss the sedation plan, and address any questions or concerns.

For Caregivers and Families

We understand that arranging dental care for a loved one with dementia, a developmental disability, or significant anxiety can feel daunting. Our team works closely with caregivers and family members at every stage — from the initial consultation through to post-procedure recovery — to make the process as smooth and reassuring as possible.
