What is a Cystoscopy?

A cystoscopy is a procedure used to look inside the bladder using a thin camera called a cystoscope. The scope is passed through the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body.

This procedure may be used to investigate:

• Blood in the urine
• Frequent urination
• Recurrent urine infections
• Bladder pain
• Poor urinary flow
• Other urinary symptoms

Some cystoscopies are done simply to diagnose a problem, while others may be part of treatment.

Before Your Procedure

Preparation depends on the type of cystoscopy you are having.

For many flexible cystoscopies done under local anaesthetic:

• You can usually eat and drink normally
• You should take your regular medicines unless told otherwise
• You should let us know if you take blood thinners

For some rigid cystoscopies done with general or spinal anaesthetic:

• You may need a pre-assessment visit
• You may need to fast before the procedure
• You will need someone to take you home afterwards

What to Expect During the Procedure

When you come in, we will help you feel comfortable and explain what will happen step by step.

During the procedure:

• You may be asked to give a urine sample
• For flexible cystoscopy, anaesthetic gel is placed into the urethra
• The cystoscope is then gently passed into the bladder
• Sterile fluid may be used to fill the bladder slightly so the lining can be seen clearly
• This may create the feeling that you need to pass urine

The procedure is usually short.

After the Procedure

After cystoscopy:

• You may have mild burning or stinging when passing urine for a short time
• You may pass urine more often for a day or two
• You may notice a small amount of blood in the urine
• Drinking water can help flush the bladder unless you were told otherwise
• If you had general or spinal anaesthetic, follow the discharge instructions carefully and rest as advised
